With a heritage of brewing beer, known as Burton upon Trent, Burton-on-Trent, or Burton for short, is a town which straddles the River Trent, England in sovereign state of UK. East of Staffordshire, the town hosts more than a dozen breweries and still brews famous brands such as Burton Bridge, Marston, Black Hole and Coors. Sales for these beers are obviously significant in the town. Burton-on-Trent is famous as "The brewing capital of Great Britain"
The town boasts high quality water which contains a large amount of salts due to the gypsum in the hill surrounding the town. This provides natural hops which acts as a preservative in beer. This enables brewers to ship beer farther away and ensure higher profits. Laws protect the water in order to maintain quality and locals passionately protect this water with all their might.
It is unclear to most people whether Burton is located in the East Midlands or the West Midlands, although the urban part of the town is located south west of the River Dove which is the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border. Burton-on-Trent has Derbyshire postcodes.
With a population of 64,449 in the 2001 census Burton-on-Trent has grown into a busy market town, surrounded by the UK National Forest. Burton-on-Trent is the furthest point from the coast in the UK mainland.
The town center provides beautiful informal parks and one can walk around town to shop at one of all of the shopping centers which include Burton Place, The Octagon and Cooper's Square that host all the normal high end shops, specialist retailers, bars and cafe's.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, one can enjoy the open air markets as well as the indoor market hall with colorful stalls.
One can also enjoy the Borough Trail, The Abbey Trail and The Brewing Trail through Burton-on-Trent.
Burton-on-Trent originated from the discovery of the good quality water and hops and it was estimated that by 1880, around 40 breweries were operating in town.
