Surprising Words, Depressing Numbers

SURPRISING WORDS: On Election Day 2008, the New Black Panther Party for Self Defense deployed its uniformed troops outside Philadelphia polling centers wielding billy clubs in a blatant show of voter intimidation. Anti-white racial insults were hurled at potential voters and one witness claimed one Black Panther said they were "tired of white supremacy." One of the last acts of the outgoing Bush administration was to file suit against the group and one of new Attorney General Eric Holder's first acts was to dismiss that suit.

Nevertheless, Holder claimed last Friday that the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division is the "conscience of our nation." That division deals with hate crimes and voting irregularities.

Once again it's apparent that so-called hate crimes have become a one-way street in which only whites can be guilty. It's also apparent that blacks can never be accused of voter intimidation, at least according to the mindset of the "conscience of our nation."

Other surprising words were voiced by Holder's boss on Monday on the "Today Show" when he reverted to Chicago gutter speak in an attempt to appear tough on dealing with the BP oil disaster in the Gulf.

Interviewed by Matt Lauer, the president said, "I don't sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar, we talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick."

Now I'm aware that using the A-word is not in the same category as using the F-word or, God forbid, the N-word and both G.W. Bush and Dick Cheney and John Kerry were caught using worse expletives but never on a nationally televised morning show. At least one TV host has had the nerve to take exception to Obama's language.

Becky Quick, co-host of CNBC's "Squawk Box," said of the president using the A-word on television during pre-school hours when kids are watching, "I think you choose your words more carefully when you are on the Today Show talking with Matt Lauer, yeah, that disturbs me. But I also think that this is a way of trying to prove that I'm mad, to do exactly what everybody's been pushing me to do, and it doesn't ring true:" http://tiny.cc/1w58s

Kudos to Ms. Quick for speaking the truth about Obama's phony, tough guy act which also calls into question his sense of presidential discretion.

DEPRESSING NUMBERS: Moreso in difficult economic times, teens try to work during the summer months to earn some extra money for gas, for dating purposes, and some to buy beer. Summer 2010 might find them grounded, alone and sober.

A CNBC article warns that sixteen to nineteen year olds are looking at the worse summer job market in 41 years.

Based on government employment data, an employment firm reports that a piddling 6,000 teens found jobs nationwide in the not-so-merry month of May while 9.7% of their elders were hitting the bricks. By way of comparison, 111,000 teens found jobs last May and 230,000 during the Bush economy heyday in 2006.

The report on this teen summer of employment discontent attributes the decline in youth jobs to the down economy and cutbacks, to college kids taking "high school positions," and to the recent phenomenon of retirees taking jobs previously filled by kids.

Many elders have returned to the workforce trying to make ends meet and "employers may prefer the older workers because they get a more experienced employee for their money:" http://tiny.cc/ml57j

More experienced plus more mature and more dependable.

Curiously, neither CNBC nor the employment company points out another obvious cause for the dearth of jobs for young people, illegal aliens who have taken those jobs. Estimates are that one in twenty workers in America is an illegal and that up to 12 million currently reside here.

Another point not referenced is the lack of job stimulation from Obama's $787 billion stimulus package

Overlooked Ways to Snap Up Christmas Sales Bargains

Many people find themselves in the stores after the holidays with gift cards in their hands looking for some bargains. The stores are looking to get rid of all their holiday stuff and you are looking to spend some money. What a great combination.

The stores are ready to get rid of their merchandise, which means that there are some great deals out there for you. The CEO and founder of deal news has some handy tips for how to get through the after Christmas sales.

The first thing that you may have noticed is that some of the retailers begin discounting their prices in the week before black Friday this past year. That could mean that the pre Christmas sales could be just as good as the after Christmas prices. Keep your eyes out for this trend.

You are likely to see a drop in prices in the week after Christmas time by as much as another ten or twenty percent. This is off of items that have already been discounted before Christmas. There will be better discounts for shoppers this year because the retailers are in desperate need to clear the items out of their stores.

The items that are not usually associated with Christmas like furniture and mattresses are probably going to be deeply discounted as well during this time of the year. These are more like end of the year sales.

Consumers have the luxury of being a little picky this year. Wait until you see the item that you want on sale. The prices are only going to go down so wait for what you want. If you frequent stores that encourage haggling, you might be able to get some outstanding bargains this year. Take a look at what all the stores are selling the item that you want for. You might be able to take advantage of a price matching program.

The biggest selling after Christmas items will be the hot selling items during the Christmas season. This means that you will get the best prices on toys and electronics during the after Christmas sales.

The big screen televisions will probably drop in price, but they will go back up in the time prior to the Super Bowl so if you are interested in picking up a deal on one of these, make sure that you get to the store during that time. Computer prices are expected to drop even further during the sales.

For those people who wait until the very last minute to do their Christmas shopping, they may be getting the best deals by waiting. There are items that go on sale on the online sites for the last online shopping day before Christmas. This is usually the last Friday before Christmas.

Some of the online sites are offering free shipping or discounted shipping upgrades. The only problem with waiting until the last minute is that your selection may be a bit limited.

Some of the greatest deals might not be on the typical Christmas items. You will probably find that software like TurboTax and Quicken are being discounted in preparation for the new releases for the upcoming tax season. There are also usually discounts on some of the kitchen electronics and household items.

This year you will probably find some great deals on items like DVD players and Blu-Ray players. The prices of these items has dropped considerably so the stores will try to give even bigger discounts after the holidays to rid their shelves of them. The movies will also be seriously discounted as well.

Make Your Own Black Friday

Black Friday. Say it out loud. It certainly doesn't sound very inviting, does it? Christmas shopping has never sounded scarier.

On this day, and even the night before, armies of eager-to-please moms take to the streets in preparation for the Christmas holiday. Waiting in hordes outside of shopping malls and retail outlets, the moms of America observe Black Friday as the holiest of days. On this, the morning after Thanksgiving, the majority of stores throughout the country offer their best deals of the year.

And they do not go unnoticed.

As far as Christmas sales go, Black Friday is the king. Gift ideas never come easier, as stores line their aisles with featured items and discounts that would seem ridiculous on any other day. But this is Black Friday. It's not just any other day.

Truth is, most Black Friday sale items are sold out before the average customer even wakes up. Opening hours earlier than usual, and greeting the largest crowds of the year, many stores turn into battlefields on the morning after Thanksgiving. The Christmas season goes into full effect on this day. Minus the holiday cheer.

While the deals are usually pretty substantial, and the rush of adrenaline that comes with fighting over a toy is hard to find elsewhere, Black Friday is one holiday I choose not to observe.

Believe it or not, you have this option too.

In fact, you can do your Christmas shopping any day you'd like. You can do it on a Tuesday. Or even a Sunday, for that matter. Any day you choose to shop for Christmas gifts is likely a fine choice. And while you may never find Black Friday sales on any other day, you will thank yourself for considering your options.

More and more, Christmas shoppers have taken to the Internet for their gift needs. Online stores are open year-round, 24 hours a day, and there are no lines to wait in or stressed-out moms to fend off. You can also find amazing deals online, using sites like Amazon or Half.com, and a larger variety than is available in most stores. Simply put, you don't even need to step foot in a real store to go Christmas shopping these days. Let alone on the busiest day of the year. Make your own Black Friday. You can even give it a more inviting name, if you'd like. Something that doesn't sound like it's the Apocalypse.
