Could Cupid be the economic stimulus that we sorely need this year?
Ok, I exaggerate slightly, but judging by this past holiday season's dismal performance, Valentine's Day might just be the panacea for our socio-economic woes.
The Christmas shopping season began with a mediocre Black Friday shopping experience as shoppers vacillated between spending during the festive season, and saving their hard-earned cash for a rainy day. No doubt as the new, more streamlined and fledgling economy cautiously emerged from the wreckage generated over the past year, it has become apparent that shoppers are still hesitant to plunge headlong into the wild-spending patterns that characterized previous Christmas shopping periods. Indeed, many stores extended their discounts till even after the new year, in order to capture those consumers who held out for the cheapest deals. But what's clear was the this time around, Christmas shopping didn't even come close to the 69.9 million shopping orders placed around the same time in 2008, nor did it reflect that just a year before, $12.8 billion worth of goods and services were ordered and consumed by Canadian households.
But what about Valentine's Day?
It's timed conveniently enough that the gloom of the Christmas season doesn't sour it over too much. And although it's technically only been half a year since the recession "ended" in 2009, it is really our first occasion to celebrate under the auspices of a recognized holiday this year. It affords us the opportunity to celebrate love and relationships, and also revel in the excitement of the cheery predictions made for the new year and the new decade to come, helping us reverse some of that negativity.
For this Valentine's Day, many pundits predict a definite upswing in consumer spending. While it may not match Christmas madness in sheer volume, it should at least (just this once) beat it in terms of shopping enthusiasm and optimism. Projections for this year augur that although couples may spend less on one another, overall spending per capita will increase. Extrapolating from American data, Canadians are expected to spend about nearly $103 per capita this Valentine's season. Data from Stats Canada tells us that businesses collected nearly $1 billion in sales from chocolate-induced madness, sold approximately $312 million - or a whopping 18.6 million litres - of sparkling wines, and more than 13.7 million stems of roses each year. Of course, not all of that was spent in February, but one could easily reason that Valentine's day could claim a significant portion of these spendings.
Moreover, with the Canadian dollar coming up to parity with the U.S. dollar this year, predictions abound that Canadian consumers will take advantage of crowdsourced, comparison and cross-border shopping engines in order to find the best deals to spend their money on. Hopefully a spending resurgence can be revived through the use of these ingenious online tools for Valentine's Day preparations, and if popularized by the shopping drive for V-Day, for a vastly convenienced shopping experience in the time after as well.
We may not share that kind of fiscal insanity this year (maybe next year), but any bit of productive spending will help buoy the consumer-driven economy that we have. Perhaps the cheer and bonhomie of this festive season will tide us over the bad times and remind us of the good ones again. After all, just like in relationships, so in real life - shouldn't we be making the most of every opportunity that comes our way?

Black Friday is coming around once again this year and it is often a time when people who are either starting to finish off their holiday shopping or may be just beginning. However Black Friday is not the promised land of saving and discount that it is on first blush. You have to do your homework and prepare properly so that you know what you are in for. If you keep this in mind and enter with a more realistic outlook you can still find some great saving on your Christmas shopping.
Look for some of the Black Friday sales to be earlier this year. This year more store are going to be starting their sales earlier. It can be from this Monday right to midnight Thursday. So pay attention to your local news and when you are out on the town so that you won't miss out on these great sales. You don't want to come the day of Black Friday and find out many of the sales you were looking forward to have come and gone.
You should also try to pay attention to the small print on some of the sales adverts. They will tell whether some of the offers may be too good to be true. Here are some big things to look for. First the phrase limit per customer. This means that inventory will be low so you should be prepared to get in quickly to get the sale items on your shopping list. Also you should look for fine print that says only an x amount of items per store. This means these items will be sold very fast. Unless you are a veteran shopper you should avoid the ensuing rush for these products.
Also expect more online sales for Black Friday. Online sales are becoming a big part of sales for retailers this year so you can expect to find some discounts online. This does come with a caveat. Just like store sales there will also be limits on the products and there is also the likelihood that they can run out. So make sure to take precautions similar to going to a regular Black Friday sale. Make sure that you are online early and ready to make your purchases. Know ahead of time what key sales to look for. Also since you are shopping online try avoid scams by confirming the website is the store's official one and all online transactions are secured.
Also try to avoid being cheated by derivatives when purchasing electronics. Sometimes a TV or washer will be advertised at an amazing price only to be replaced by an inferior model that looks similar but doesn't have the same features. These are called derivatives and you should make sure to know the model number for the advertised item so you can tell the difference. That way you will be sure to avoid this particular Black Friday scam.
Something special you can do for your kids this holiday season is to have them get a special phone call from Santa. This will make Christmas a magical experience as they get to speak to Santa in person on Christmas day. You can order the call online and customize it with information from your children's Christmas letters. Do something that will be unforgettable for your kids this holiday.
Create magic in your child's eyes with our letters from Santa. EZSantaLetters.com offers fully personalized Santa letters and 15 pre-written Santa Letters. All letters are postmarked from the North Pole and will definitely put a smile on your child's face.

Ready, set, go! With the passing of Thanksgiving Day comes the craziest shopping time of the year; Holiday Shopping Season. To many Americans this is their favorite time of the year and an annual pastime. Much like the Super Bowl, New Years Eve and Easter they look forward to this day all year long; the infamous Black Friday! Many have a family tradition of getting up at 4:00 AM and waiting in lines for the retail superstores to open so they can take advantage of all the Black Friday specials. Many of the major retailers rely on the holiday season for the majority of their yearly sales. They rely on as much as 50% of their yearly sales to come during this time of the year. Even though many of the major retailers began holiday sales earlier than usual this year due to the economy, a lot of people are still ramping up for this holiday season. Getting up at 4:00 AM, braving the bitter cold, shoulder to shoulder lines, arguing over who grabbed the new Dora The Explorer Doll or that special piece of costume jewelry first...sounds like fun, doesn't it?
Then, on the heels of Black Friday comes Cyber Monday. This term was coined several years ago when many of the online retailers reported a large spike of sales on the Monday following Black Friday. Against many employers' wishes, consumers point-and-click Monday morning to try and purchase all the things they missed out on the Friday earlier. Some of the perks to Cyber Monday include: having all the items in stock, so there is no arguing or rushing down isles to find a certain item, the same, if not greater discounts on many of the items and free shipping. The free shipping is something that most online retailers have added this year as an extra perk and incentive to do your holiday shopping online. Also, with giant leaps being made every year in online security, it is safer than ever to purchase online. I greatly prefer the Cyber Monday crowd opposed to the Black Friday folks, but that's just my preference.
Surprisingly, this season doesn't have the ''Must Have'' gift, unlike prior holidays. I'm sure you can remember the Tickle-Me Elmo, X-Box 360 or Playstation 3 craze in prior years. Here is a list of our projected Top 10 Gifts this year:
1) Digital Camera
2) Nintendo Wii
3) Apple iPod Touch
4) Caster Board
5) Apple iPhone
6) Universal Remote
7) Hannah Montana Toys
8) Celebrity Fashion Jewelry / Jewelry
9) Robot Dog
10) LCD TV
Like it or not, the season is now upon us. So, good luck and happy holidays!

Thanksgiving and Christmas is right around the corner. That means people are looking for bargains. One of the ways you can boost your profits, and make up for lost sales, is by advertising with flyers. Here are a few great ideas to help you get started.
Advertise flyers in the Sunday newspapers
One of the best ways of attracting busy shoppers during the holiday season is through the newspaper. That is when people start sorting through advertisements to see which stores are having "Black Friday" sales the day after Thanksgiving. Newspapers have great deals for this type of advertising. When you advertise in large quantities, they will often help you with the design process- free of charge!
You can find the ad rates by searching your local newspapers website. In addition, most newspapers will have special discounts if you distribute your flyers on any other day except Sunday. Even though people recommend advertising on Sundays, you can actually get better response rates on Thursdays or Fridays during the holidays because your not competing with a huge stack of other advertisers.
Advertise your flyers door-to-door
Another option is having an advertising service deliver your flyers door-to-door. This method of flyer distribution is effective because there are very few competitors that use this medium of advertising. Spend a little time researching and you can find a flyer distribution service for as little as $50 per thousand flyers. Take advantage of these low distribution prices and deliver 20,000 flyers at a time.
Advertise ahead of your competition
Businesses start advertising their Christmas products the day before Thanksgiving and sometimes the day after. You can beat your competition to the punch by advertising a few days or maybe even a week ahead of everyone else. That way people view your flyers message first!
Advertising in a week economy is difficult. However, even with the current financial crisis on Wall Street, you can find ways to boost your revenue during the holidays- advertising with flyers is just one of them.
Robert just launched a new website that has tons of valuable flyer Printing tips at http://cheapflyerprinting.net In addition, you can learn dozens of cost effective flyer distribution strategies by going to Flyer Distribution

Okay, I admit it. I was hooked. I was addicted. I couldn't help myself. I'd see one and it's as if an uncontrollable urge took my steering wheel and steered me into it. I'm talking about, of course, yard sales.
It all started so innocently, just a few years ago. I was a successful bank auditor for a national chain of savings and loan associations. (Right there, you could see I was heading for the down slide.) Married. Two kids. Beautiful home in the upper echelon neighborhood. It was Friday. The end of a particularly difficult week. I was on my way home in the "Beemer" when a neon colored sign, attached to a telephone pole, caught my eye. On the next corner, there was another one. On this one, I could almost make out what the Magic Marker scribble said on it. In large bold letters it read, "Yard Sale." Having invested in several pieces of real estate, I decided to check this out.
When I arrived at the address written on this slip-shod excuse for a sign, I couldn't believe my eyes. Instantly, I thought to myself, "No wonder this poor soul can't sell his property. He's got junk strewn all over the yard." Then I noticed a group of people looking down at all this junk, picking some of it up and inspecting it as if it contained the meaning to life. The way these people were looking down at the ground I could only assume that someone had lost their contact lens. So, I joined in.
I asked this nappy looking gentleman, dressed in an old flannel shirt and jeans rolled up three times at the cuff, what the attraction for this particular piece of property was. That's when he informed me that the property wasn't for sale, but all these used, sometimes dirty, but always unattractive belongings were. "You have got to be kidding," I chortled.
As I was leaving, shaking my head in disbelief at these poor, unfortunate wretches, feeling sorry that they didn't have anything better to do with their afternoons or money, something caught my attention. Something that tossed that particularly difficult week I just had to the back of my mind. Something that flashed me back to a more innocent time in my life. A time when my most absorbing decision was what game to play after lunch.
It was a cookie jar. A cookie jar that, by today's standards, would be stereotypical and controversial. It was a cookie jar that was in the shape of a heavy set black maid wearing a kerchief on her head and ankle length petticoats. An image not unlike that of Mammy in the movie "Gone With The Wind." An image that reminded me of a wonderful time in my life when all it took was a lift of Mammy's head and, inside her body, find a delicious surprise that my mother always kept filled.
I had to have it. The masking tape price tag on it said, "Five dollars." I quickly pulled out my wallet and handed the woman holding the sale the exact amount. My nappy looking friend told me as I was exiting that paying full price at a yard sale was the sure sign of an amateur. He told me that bargaining for an item was as standard practice at a yard sale as wearing an old flannel shirt and rolled up jeans.
The next day, Saturday, I was spending quality time with the wife and kids, by taking them rollerblading in the park.
On my way home, I couldn't believe the number of neon colored signs posted on everything from telephone poles to street signs. I just knew there were memories of my childhood at each and every one of them. But if I was going to rebuild my youth, I was going to need a plan. So, every Friday I would pick up the newspaper and find the section that listed the yard sales in my neighborhood. I would circle the ones I wanted to go to and number each one in the order of the farthest to the closest. I kept finding things that reminded me of my youth; little green army men, 45 RPM records and a first edition Jeopardy box game.
My fascination became an obsession. I couldn't wait until the weekend and my weekly scavenger hunt. I traded my "Beemer" in for a van, because my treasures began getting bigger.
Then, one day, "Nappy" told me something my ears couldn't believe. He asked me if I had ever been to a flea market. I had heard of them but always thought they were very tiny King Kullens.
In no time I was attending every yard sale, garage sale, flea market and Chinese auction within a hundred mile radius.
Eventually, my wife divorced me.
I hit rock bottom when I was picked up for vagrancy. In all truthfulness, I was merely camping out on the lawn of a yard sale the night before it took place. Rumor had it that these people were selling a classic G.E. washer with electric wringer.
As I spent the night in jail with a drunk who reeked of stale beer and a teenager who bludgeoned his parents with three feet of number two garden hose, I realized I needed some help.
The judge looked at me dressed in my flannel shirt and jeans rolled up three times at the cuff and sentenced me to one year at "The Home for the Chronic Bargain Hunters" in Wilma, Iowa, where the people of Wilma have never even heard the words yard sale or garage sale.
I am proud to say that I am nearly recovered. I can tell. The home set up a mock yard sale last weekend to test our discipline. We drove by and stopped in a company bus to see who couldn't resist the temptation of getting off and clamoring through these apparently false reproductions of genuine yard sale trinkets.
We all passed, except for Oliver "Ollie" Parker, who leaped from the bus, dressed in his double knit suit and paid full price for a fifteenth edition of Jeopardy. I just smiled and chuckled to myself, "Amateur."

Friday evening rush hour in Los Angeles is a bad scene. How is it in your area? Friday evening rush hour before a three-day weekend is the worst--stalls, stops, and frustration. We have a choice: rage or relax
On a recent Friday I was on the north side of Los Angeles and needed to get to the South Bay area. I waited until 7 p.m. to begin the journey, thinking the bulk of the traffic would have moved out by then. Most of the drive went smoothly, the 405 (Californians call their freeways, like Interstate 405, "the___) the 405 became a parking lot as it neared the Getty Center which looks down on the highway from a cliff high above. Cars stood shoulder to shoulder on the six-lane highway, crawling forward below a snail's pace.
Luckily, I remembered an audiotape I'd pulled out of the trunk of the car earlier and popped it into the player. Instant change! Marches played by the London Philharmonic conjured up visions of pomp and ceremony. I turned the volume up. Suddenly my white Mercury Topaz became a gilded coach and the trumpets were clearing the way. From insignificance to importance in a single solid stanza.
It was amazing how the small opening in front of me became majestic--like it opened up just for me-- with a black Jaguar on one side, a champagne-colored Mercedes on the other, a white pickup truck behind it, and so it went. Sure, we continued to inch along, but I relaxed as the music transformed my mood from extreme frustration to exuberance. The only things under my control in that sea of cars were my own thoughts and emotions.
What do you do to lift your spirits to a natural high? Do you have a ritual which brings you to a peaceful state of mind? How can you change your attitude in an instant from negative to positive? Perhaps meditating on a favorite quiet place or reflecting on a happy time would help. One of my favorites is a photograph of a field of Blue Bonnet flowers on a river bank. That picture provided an escape from extremely stressful times at my desk in the Pentagon. I could lose myself in it for a moment and gather strength to get back to work.
If we see ourselves as "done onto," it's easy to see ourselves as victims of circumstances. Highway gridlock in many large cities is becoming a way of life. Forget rage. Choose to be happy and take charge of our own attitude!

ComScore has just announced that US shoppers have broken the record for online shopping. The Monday after the US Thanksgiving holiday has come to be known as "Cyber Monday", as online shoppers cash in on holiday specials. This year UK shoppers spent over $733 million in 24 hours. It was appropriately named report, "Holiday Season e-Commerce" has announced that since the 1st of November, 2007, over 10.7 billion dollars have been spent online.
The day was named "Cyber Monday" as it previously been recorded as the day when most US residents start doing their Christmas shopping. With the benefits of buying online, citizens have turned to the Internet to order their gifts online rather than going to the mall. ComScore, an online tracker company, estimates that the shopping craze will continue for the next few weeks, up until Christmas. There are expectations that expenditure will reach 800 million dollars on some days.
Cyber Monday's online spending went up by 21% this year, beating last year's record. The day is the most significant spike in all holiday spending. The number of online buyers grew by a total of 38% from the previous record. However the average amount a person spent online dropped by 12%.
It has been reported that the decrease in spending could be attributed to companies offering discounts and becoming more "internet savvy" with their advertisements and sales. A fair amount of the large companies in the US had Cyber Monday sales online for the new trend of online shopping.
The report showed that 6% of US internet users made online purchases on the Monday, with 60% of them coming from work computers. A few retail websites went down on the day, as the traffic surge caused technical problems with their sites. Error messages popped up on users' screens instead of completed transaction notices. Yahoo reported that the traffic on their Yahoo! Merchant Solutions caused smaller retail companies' websites to black out for several hours.
However, larger retail sites, such as Wal-Mart, Dell, Best Buy, Circuit City and Overstock.com jumped up their traffic scale by 100%. There was a 261% increase reported on the MSN Shopping site operated by Microsoft. However, it is not only websites that are finding the boom in traffic stressful; credit and house markets are also being buffeted by the extra strain.
The Friday after Thanks Giving is known as Black Friday. The National Retail Federation showed that, according to their survey, more than 147 million shoppers went online on Black Friday. This is up from last year, by 4.8%. Overall there's been more than a 4% rise in holiday spending this year.
Black Friday was originally named due to the amount of high traffic on the day. Although it is not an official holiday, most UK citizens take the day off for a long weekend. Because it is also the start of Christmas shopping season, there is a large amount of traffic on the roads. As online shopping becomes popular, traffic on the roads is moving over to traffic on websites for the shopping.
With delivery times taken into consideration, online sales should relax and calm down as the festive season declines. However, sales at shops and malls should slowly pick up with Christmas now only a mere month away.

The economy - it was a major issue in the last election and with its roller coaster drops has caused average consumers to hold tightly to their wallets. Shoppers seem to be cutting back on everything that isn't a necessity. So where does that leave retailers as they approach the holiday season? After all, the day after Thanksgiving, better known as Black Friday, kicks off the time of year when many businesses make the majority of their profits. Retailers are expected to drastically cut prices this season, but they still have to advertise sales to draw in consumers.
Customized lapel pins can make a big impact on your holiday sales without putting a big dent in your budget. They're high quality, which makes them more like jewelry than buttons or stickers. They can be custom-created in every style and design imaginable, making them a perfect match for sales or holiday events. Best of all, they're inexpensive compared to other forms of advertising. Just look at some of the ways they can make a difference in your business.
Promote Specials and Sales with Lapel Pins
Because lapel pins can be made into any shape and with any color, they're a great idea for sales associates who need to promote holiday specials. Lapel pins showing the company logo with copy such as "Ask About Our 25% Off Specials" are sure to get attention not only in the store, but anywhere the associate wearing your pin happens to go. It's a walking advertisement. If your business offers a lay-a-way policy, use lapel pins to let consumers know. Someone who can't afford an item today might be willing to purchase it if they can make payments over time and not pay interest.
Spread the Word
In the service industry? Try using lapel pins to bring in new clients. Have holiday pins made with your logo then give them to your regular customers. If those customers give their pin to someone who becomes a new client, they both get a discount. This can work for hairstylists, manicurists, pet groomers and countless others. If you sell cookware, jewelry or other items via in-home parties, give holiday lapel pins out with each order. When your customers wear their pins, it gives them the perfect opportunity to share what they like about your product with others. It's a well-known fact that word of mouth is the best advertisement of all.
Lapel Pins Boost Holiday Giving
Lapel pins work wonderfully for nonprofits as well. They can be given to contributors to help increase holiday giving and to say thank you for past and future support. Having a holiday bazaar or other program? Order lapel pins that advertise the event and pass them out to members of your organization. Wearing their pins when they're out and about is a perfect way to spread the word and promote ticket sales. You may even want to give lapel pins to customers for buying tickets early, or for buying a certain number of tickets.
During this holiday season, when everyone is trying to make the most of their money, businesses and consumers alike win with the use of lapel pins. Businesses enjoy increased sales without enormous advertising expenses, while consumers benefit from reduced prices and give-a-ways. Try lapel pins for your group or business this holiday season and see what a difference they make.

A great number of self-improvement gurus speak of wealth. If you turn on the television, surf the internet, go to the book store and look at the best sellers list, a great number focus on financial well-being. There are those who speak of other aspects of self-improvement; however, the majority promote that which will fill the seats: monetary gain. Even the great Napoleon Hill, of Think and Grow Rich fame, spoke of financial wealth even though he invoked religious and spiritual themes.
Of course, he was writing after the Great Depression and almost everyone's focus was on finances at the time. But as one of the more popular sayings goes, it is money that makes the world go 'round. And there is nothing wrong with money. According to Zig Ziglar, the great motivational "encourager," "money is not the most important thing in life, but it is reasonably close to oxygen." An adequate amount of money provides for peace of mind, a house, the bills paid and debtors kept at bay; it simply enables one to provide for family-and if need be-friends.
Money is not the root of all evil, only the people who love it above all else. And this is where a problem arises. In the scheme of things, for you, where does money rate in relationship to other things: family, honesty, integrity, sincerity, valor, trust, all which can be lost or compromised if money is the priority.
What one needs to do in order to become financially successful has been covered time and again by many a guru; however, what is interesting to note is that the greatest lessons one can learn from the pursuit of great financial rewards are offshoots of the pursuit or excellence. Because in order to excel, excel in most areas of life, one must make great sacrifices in time, exert great effort, gain focus and purpose, maintain a serious level of persistence, and overcome the self and self-defeating habits through thorough self-examination and discipline. These things are of a much greater reward and of a much greater eternal significance (these principles last and remain with the individual forever; money and material things are fleeting and temporary), for it is here where one comes to understand the true purpose of life.
"It is one of the strange ironies of this strange life [that] those who work the hardest, who subject themselves to the strictest discipline, who give up certain pleasurable things in order to achieve a goal, are the happiest people."--Brutus Hamilton
It is this being of "the happiest people" that truly and significantly enriches the soul. There are many who are rich but find little joy in life. There are many poor and middle class who live their lives this way too. But great joy abounds in this universe of ours. However, in order to find true joy one must tap into certain universal laws and principles. And I'm not talking "I've just been to Disneyland" joy but joy that lasts a lifetime and then some:
"If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody."--Chinese proverb
It is this reaching out to others, this giving of the self that invigorates and enlivens. Time and time and time again stories come out of Hollywood (I use Hollywood because few of our neighbors are being interviewed these days) about first time mothers and fathers and the great joy and purpose therein that they have found. They see for the first time real joy. They see for the first time much greater importance beyond the self. They see for the first time that nothing is more important than a child for whom they would give their lives if need be. Why? Let's examine this truth.
We know that great joy comes from reaching out to help others, but where does the greatest joy reside? Certainly one can find fleeting joys, temporary joys, but where do the long lasting, self-perpetuating joys come from? What is most important to most people. Answer? Family. Spouse. Mother. Father. Son. Daughter. Grandmother. Grandfather. Relations. Consider this point, how long do we grieve for the loss of a car, a job, a favorite piece of clothing or jewelry? Certainly we can experience sadness or depression because of loss here, but do any of them last a lifetime like when we lose a daughter, son, friend, mother, father? Why? Because we lose a bit of ourselves, our humanity, our familia when relations die. It is these lives that give us life. Sustain us. Promote us. Energize us. You can take all the self-help, self-improvement, self-actualization classes you want, but if you lack family, a family that nurtures and encourages, then you are left with little success that matters.
At the foundation of any healthy, successful society is the family.
"The approaching tenth anniversary of the International Year of the Family had prompted many governments to reaffirm the critical importance of the family as a central unit of society." (www.un.org 2004)
"The newly published Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church dedicates one of its first chapters to the institution of the family, described as "the vital cell of society." (Vatican Compendium on the Importance of the Family http://www.zenit.org 2004)
It is in the family where one needs to learn important truths and principles that will not only aid in creating a stronger family but those principles will be taken into school halls, business meetings, all gatherings public and private to create a better society. It is where one learns discipline, respect for self and others, cooperation, humor, laughter and play.
"Marriage requires collaboration, commitment and a sense of responsibility; these things equip us to choose and to work together towards a "we, us" or " together" orientation. We must strive to develop a deeper knowledge of the importance of the family and family values in Islam in order to deal with the powerful forces that surround us."
We must set aside a special time each week for our family members to enjoy one another, communicate, plan, and study Islam together. Husbands and wives need to spend time together talking and striving to have a sense of humor. They need to exercise self-control because when either of them gets angry and loses control, the effects can be wounding. Our tempers can get us into big problems." (Kassaimah Muslim Homes: Islamic Family Values in An Anti-Family Society http://www.missionislam.com 2007)
It is here where one learns of "reaching out" to others. This is not something that is or should be taught by schools, governments, communities, public or private institutions. It is in the family where one learns and earns a strong foundation. It is the responsibility of the parents to teach these principles, and if they don't know of them, they need to do their due diligence and learn of them through family, church or private counseling.
It constantly and consistently amazes me that these principles are not common knowledge. Maybe they do need to be taught in schools to parents and then have the children pass them on to their children and so on. And after this has been done for some time the family can take over with a proper, social, emotional, spiritual education.
Interesting to note that the amount and consistency of love, respect and attention that a child receives before the age of five to a great degree determines that child's mental welfare and stability for the remainder of its life.
Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives-mothers and fathers-will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations." (Gordon B. Hinkley "The Family: A Proclamation to the World")
Nothing outside of the family can make up for any excessive abuse or lack of love within.
